Boiler parts • Expansion tank
Check more than the tank.
Boiler expansion tank problems can contribute to an excessive pressure rise as the heating water warms. Relief discharge or recurring pressure changes justify assessment, but they do not identify a failed tank by themselves. Ask whether the tank’s condition, suitability and connection—and the rest of the pressure-control arrangement—have been checked before approving replacement.
Share the appliance model and visible symptom. Confirm equipment support, scope and availability with SkyLimit.
What does a boiler expansion tank do?
It provides space for temperature-related changes in the heating water’s volume. Its role is different from circulating water or controlling the burner. The Navien NFC-H owner manual describes this function and calls for expansion-tank checks in the service schedule for that family.
Tank precharge
This refers to the gas-side charge in a suitable tank. It is not simply the reading on the boiler’s water-pressure display.
The Amtrol heating-system support guide relates the appropriate hydronic precharge to the system fill pressure. That relationship is professional setup guidance, not a universal number to copy.
System pressure
This is pressure in the connected water circuit. A reading needs context: whether the system is cold or heating, the equipment involved and the correct installation requirements.
Ask the assessor to distinguish these measurements in the explanation rather than describing both as “the tank pressure.”
A tank can be internal or connected externally depending on the equipment. An accessible external vessel’s colour or shape is not enough to identify its application or prove that it is correctly sized. Supply the label if it is safely visible.
For the broader pressure-loss symptom, see why a boiler keeps losing pressure. This guide focuses on the expansion component and questions about its assessment.
Boiler expansion tank problems: clues versus confirmed findings
If water appears at the safety outlet, read the boiler pressure relief valve leaking guide for discharge timing and questions about the valve and system pressure.
A useful diagnosis connects the reported pattern to a tested condition. Do not deliberately run a damaged system to reproduce a pressure change. Report observations from ordinary use and let the assessor decide the safe test sequence.
| Observation | What it does not prove | Question for the assessor |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure rises unusually during heating | That replacing the tank alone will correct the whole issue. | What tank and system findings explain the rise? |
| Relief outlet drips | Whether the primary cause is excessive pressure or the valve itself. | Why did discharge occur, and what was verified? |
| Pressure is low after cooling | Where water was lost or which component caused it. | Was preceding discharge or another loss established? |
| Tank looks corroded or damaged | That adding air is appropriate or safe. | What condition was found, and what action is required? |
The Navien manual distinguishes a relief-valve seating problem from over-pressurization associated with an expansion issue. A wet outlet needs its cause investigated; blocking it defeats a safety function.
Do not rely on an internet “tap test” or a photograph to declare a tank serviceable. Different designs and installation conditions require their own assessment. An intact exterior does not by itself verify performance.
Four questions before a replacement is approved
- Which circuit is this tank serving?
Establish whether it belongs to the closed heating circuit or domestic water. The Amtrol EXTROL instructions specify the intended hydronic application and exclude domestic-water use for the described product. Match the actual replacement to its purpose.
- What selection basis is being used?
Ask how the proposed tank suits the connected system and documented operating requirements. A similar connection or the same external dimensions do not establish suitability.
- What else is included in the work?
Confirm the connection, relevant pressure-control checks and any other findings. Ask how additional work will be explained before the scope expands.
- How will the result be verified?
Request the relevant checks after installation, the finding they support and any limitations or follow-up observations. “New tank fitted” is a work description, not a complete explanation of the recurring symptom.
The EXTROL instructions require professional installation and warn against recharging a corroded or damaged vessel. Do not apply its procedure to a different tank or attempt adjustment to keep a suspect component in use.
Use the gas boiler parts guide for model identification and compatibility enquiries. Confirm part availability independently; a listed brand does not guarantee stock for a particular system.
Describe the pressure pattern first. You do not need to order a tank before requesting help.
Bring a short history to the appointment
The most useful information explains what changed. Collect accessible details without removing covers, moving a vessel or touching hot pipes.
- Boiler and tank model labels, where safely visible.
- Existing pressure readings with units and known cold/heating state.
- When water appears and whether the location is consistently the same.
- Recent refills, repairs, renovations or tank replacement.
- Whether heating or domestic hot water has also changed.
For active pressure or discharge problems, start with gas boiler repair. A maintenance enquiry can use boiler service and maintenance, with the symptom disclosed so the scope can be confirmed.
Local assessment information is available for boiler repair in North Vancouver and boiler repair in West Vancouver. Confirm coverage, the exact equipment and available appointments.
For shared heating in a strata building, involve the person authorized to approve work and arrange mechanical-room access. If a tank has just been replaced, provide the work record and explain whether the original symptom continued or a new symptom appeared.
Photo space: show the tank and connection
This illustration is a placeholder. Replace it with an approved image that identifies visible equipment without claiming an unverified fault.
Questions about expansion-tank assessment
What are signs of boiler expansion tank problems?
An unusually large pressure rise during heating, relief discharge or visible tank deterioration can justify assessment. These observations do not establish the cause on their own. Report the timing and request checks of the tank and connected pressure-control arrangement.
Does a dripping relief valve mean the expansion tank is bad?
No. Discharge may accompany excessive system pressure or a valve that does not seat correctly. The assessor should explain which condition was confirmed. Never plug or cap a relief discharge to stop a drip.
Can I recharge a boiler expansion tank myself?
Do not adjust or recharge an unfamiliar tank. The correct procedure depends on the product and system conditions. A corroded or damaged pressure vessel needs professional assessment rather than an attempt to add air.
What pressure should an expansion tank be set to?
There is no universal target for every installation. The tank’s required precharge and the system’s water pressure are related but are different measurements. Ask for the exact product guidance and the basis for the setting used by the professional.
Can I use a water-heater expansion tank on a boiler?
Do not assume interchangeability. A hydronic heating tank and a domestic-water expansion tank must be suitable for their intended circuit. Have the replacement checked against the actual application, product documentation and installation.
Does replacing the tank mean replacing the boiler?
No. A confirmed connected-component fault can have a different repair scope from an appliance failure. Request the finding, compatible replacement and verification plan before considering a whole-boiler replacement.
Why does pressure still change after a new tank is installed?
Some temperature-related change can occur. A recurring abnormal pattern should be assessed in context of the new tank selection, setup, connection and other pressure-control components. A new part alone does not prove that every cause has been corrected.
Ask what the finding explains.
Send the model, pressure pattern and visible symptom to SkyLimit. Confirm the assessment scope and appointment availability before booking.
A part recommendation should follow the verified cause and the actual installation.
