Boiler help • No heat
Start with what still works.
A gas boiler not heating the house can involve the heating request, appliance operation or the circuit delivering heat to the rooms. A lit display or pump noise does not establish the cause. Note whether the whole home or one zone is cold, whether hot water works and any visible code. Then arrange an assessment that includes the affected function.
Tell SkyLimit the model and affected rooms. Confirm equipment support, availability and the diagnostic scope when booking.
Gas boiler not heating the house: separate three situations
The pattern helps define the enquiry; it does not identify a failed part. Use the table to describe the missing function rather than guessing what to replace.
| What you notice | What to report | Scope to discuss |
|---|---|---|
| Every heating zone is cold | Display status, visible code and whether any heating demand appears. | The heating request, appliance and connected system. |
| One room or floor stays cold | Affected thermostat or zone; areas that still heat. | The particular circuit and its controls. |
| Hot water works but heating does not | Combi, indirect tank or separate hot-water appliance. | Space-heating operation and the actual hot-water arrangement. |
| Heat starts, then stops again | Timing, displayed message and whether the fault returns. | The operating condition that triggers the interruption. |
For an active problem, the gas boiler repair guide explains the regional assessment approach. Planned maintenance is a different scope and should not be assumed to resolve an undiagnosed loss of heat.
What you can note without opening the equipment
Check familiar owner controls and record visible information only when it is safe. Look at the room thermostat’s heating mode, schedule and displayed target temperature. Follow its owner instructions; do not alter wiring or installer settings.
- Write down the exact appliance code or message.
- List the rooms and heat emitters affected.
- Note when the problem began and whether it is constant.
- Record a safely visible pressure reading without changing valves.
- Mention recent maintenance, renovations or control changes.
A photo of an accessible label or display can be useful. Do not remove covers, reach behind equipment, touch hot pipes or climb to a vent terminal. Water near electrical components, a submerged appliance or suspected freeze damage requires professional advice before approaching or operating equipment.
A repeated refill, reset or temperature increase can obscure a useful fault pattern. Do not bypass a safety device, cap a relief discharge or force an unfamiliar valve open. There is no universal pressure or boiler-water temperature setting suitable for every installation.
If the pressure reading repeatedly falls as well as heat failing, read why a boiler keeps losing pressure for what to record and why repeated top-ups do not establish a repair.
Follow the heating path, not the sound
When the complaint is limited to one area, read the guide to a cold heating zone and its valve. It explains what to record when one circuit heats only with another or stays warm without a demand.
If the circulator appears active but heat is not reaching the rooms, read the boiler circulator pump problems guide for demand, operation and connected-flow questions.
“It is on” can mean several things
The screen may have power while the appliance waits for a request or reports a fault. A sound may come from a pump or fan rather than prove successful heating. Tell the assessor what the display actually shows.
Heat must reach the rooms
A hydronic boiler heats water; controls and circulation deliver it through emitters. The Navien boiler FAQ explains this basic operation. Appliance operation and room comfort are connected but separate checks.
Possible assessment areas include thermostats and demand signals, connected zone controls, pumps, water conditions and the appliance’s own operation. Those are investigation areas, not diagnoses. Air can interfere with circulation in some systems, but that does not mean bleeding is the correct first action for every cold radiator or floor.
For a combi appliance, distinguish space heating from domestic hot water. See combi boiler hot water but no heating for normal priority operation and a heating failure that persists. With an indirect tank, identify the connected tank demand. If hot water comes from a separate heater, its normal operation does not demonstrate that the boiler is functioning.
For example, the Navien NFC-H owner manual describes model-specific demand and status information. This is an example for that family, not operating instructions for another Navien product, Viessmann, IBC, Bosch, Rinnai or Super Hot equipment.
Ask what evidence supports the repair
The proposed work should address the reported failure and explain the confirmed finding. A code or cold room does not alone establish that the control board, pump or whole boiler needs replacement.
| Question | Useful answer to request |
|---|---|
| What is confirmed? | The tested fault, rather than a list of possible causes. |
| Which equipment is included? | The appliance, affected zone and any connected hot-water controls. |
| Why this part? | Diagnostic evidence and compatibility with the exact model. |
| How will the result be checked? | Relevant operating and safety checks, plus any untested condition. |
Use the gas boiler parts guide for compatibility questions. Confirm stock and suitability for the actual component. Ask how additional findings will be explained and approved before work expands.
In a suite or strata property, establish whether the equipment is privately owned or shared. Contact the authorized manager when needed and arrange access to the relevant controls. Confirm acceptance of the exact system before coordinating an interruption.
Choose the next step from the finding
Loss of heat calls for assessment; it does not automatically mean replacement. A repairable connected-control fault may need a different proposal from a failed appliance component. Ask for unresolved issues to be recorded.
- Gas boiler repair: investigate the active fault and affected function.
- Gas boiler service and maintenance: plan appropriate care for the equipment.
- Gas boiler installation: assess replacement when the findings justify that discussion.
For a local enquiry, see gas boiler repair in Port Coquitlam or gas boiler repair in West Vancouver. Other service-area requests can start with the repair overview. Include the address, exact model and affected function; confirm coverage and appointment availability.
Photo space: show the system, not an assumed diagnosis
This illustration is a placeholder. An approved equipment photo should describe what is visible without claiming a fault that has not been verified.
Quick answers about a boiler with no heat
Why is my gas boiler not heating the house even though it is on?
A powered display does not prove that the burner is firing or that heated water reaches the rooms. The heating demand, appliance operation, circulation and zone controls may need assessment. Record what the display shows, which areas are cold and whether domestic hot water works.
Why does one floor stay cold while the rest of the house heats?
The affected zone may have a separate thermostat, valve, pump or other control arrangement. Report which areas still heat and what has changed. A zone-specific complaint should be assessed before assuming the whole boiler has failed.
Can hot water work while the heating fails?
Yes. In a combi arrangement, heating and domestic hot water have different demands and connected functions. Hot water working does not prove that the heating circuit works. If a separate appliance supplies hot water, its operation tells you even less about the boiler.
Should I keep resetting a boiler that will not heat?
Do not repeatedly reset an unexplained fault to keep the appliance running. Record the exact code and use the owner guidance for the correct model. If the problem returns, obtain professional assessment; a cleared display is not proof that the cause has been corrected.
Should I refill or bleed the system to restore heat?
Do not refill, drain or open valves on an unfamiliar system. Pressure requirements and procedures depend on the equipment and installation. Report any safely visible reading, leak or recent pressure change and ask for model-specific professional guidance.
Does no heat mean I need a replacement boiler?
No. A thermostat, connected control or circulation fault may be repairable without replacing the appliance. Request the verified cause, proposed work and unresolved findings before comparing repair with a replacement assessment.
Tell us what is cold and what still works.
Contact SkyLimit with the affected rooms, display message, model and hot-water arrangement. Confirm the diagnostic scope and availability before booking.
A clear symptom description helps prepare the assessment; it does not replace on-site diagnosis.
