Gas fitting in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley starts with the appliance, the existing gas system and the work you want completed. SkyLimit Heating and Gas Ltd. can discuss gas appliance connections, gas line installation, cooking equipment, barbecue hookups, patio heaters and fire pits. Tell us your city, the equipment model and whether you are replacing an appliance or adding a new gas connection.
A connection that fits physically is not enough to establish that the installation is suitable. Fuel type, appliance input, available gas supply, the piping route, clearances, ventilation and manufacturer requirements all matter. An assessment helps establish the work before you purchase equipment or arrange finishing trades.
Call 778-892-5119 Discuss your gas fitting project
Smell gas? Leave the area. Do not operate electrical switches, use a phone inside, or create an ignition source. Once outside, call the FortisBC emergency line at 1-800-663-9911 or 911. Do not wait for a service request or website message. Read FortisBC gas leak guidance.
Which gas fitting service do you need?
Describe the outcome you need before choosing a service. Reconnecting an existing range, extending a line to an outdoor appliance, investigating a recurring equipment fault and planning a new gas supply are different projects. The information below helps identify what to discuss when you contact us.
| Your project | What the assessment should establish | Useful information to send |
|---|---|---|
| Replace a gas range or oven | Fuel compatibility, connection condition, appliance requirements, access and installation scope | Old and new model numbers, delivery date and photographs of the location |
| Connect a natural gas barbecue | Whether the equipment is approved for the intended fuel and the outlet and supply are suitable | Barbecue model, fuel label and a photograph of the existing outlet |
| Add or relocate a gas line | Connected loads, capacity, routing, protection, approvals and permit responsibility | The proposed appliance input and a description of the route and property |
| Service a patio heater or fire pit | Equipment identification, permitted location, operating condition and parts requirements | Model details, symptoms and photographs taken from a safely accessible position |
| Replace heating or hot-water equipment | The complete installation, including gas supply and any appliance-specific venting or electrical work | Existing equipment details and the heating or hot-water change you are considering |
Gas range and gas oven connections
A kitchen appliance replacement should be planned around the new model’s installation instructions and the condition of the existing connection. The fact that the previous range worked does not establish that its connector, shutoff location or surrounding installation is appropriate for the replacement. The fitter needs to assess the complete connection and appliance requirements.
Before delivery, confirm the selected appliance’s fuel type and installation dimensions. Tell us whether it is a freestanding range, slide-in appliance, cooktop or separate oven. A change in cabinet layout, the appliance position or the equipment input can affect the work. Electrical and cabinetry requirements should also be coordinated with the relevant trades.
For an existing appliance that has been moved during flooring, cleaning or renovation work, describe what was disconnected and by whom. Do not reconnect it yourself or move a heavy range to expose the connection for a photograph. A visible supply point is useful information, but safe access can be established during the visit.
Ask what is included in the appointment: connection work, any required installation checks, appliance operation and explanation of the completed work. Appliance delivery, removal, cabinetry, electrical changes and repairs to the appliance itself should be confirmed separately. This avoids discovering gaps in the scope after the delivery team has left.
Natural gas barbecue hookups
Start with the barbecue’s fuel label and model number. A propane barbecue should not be connected to a natural gas outlet simply because an adapter or hose appears to fit. Any fuel conversion must be supported by the manufacturer and performed within the applicable installation requirements. Some models do not have an approved conversion option.
For an existing natural gas outlet, the assessment should consider the connected appliance, the condition and suitability of the connection and the gas demand on the system. A weak flame can have several explanations; it does not automatically mean that a larger line or a different regulator is the answer. Diagnosis should precede a parts recommendation.
If a new outlet is proposed, explain where you want to use the barbecue and whether the route crosses a deck, exterior wall or shared area. Access, protection, appliance clearances and building restrictions can influence the installation. In a condo or strata property, obtain the relevant approval before treating a proposed outlet location as available.
Keep the appliance instructions and approved accessories available for the appointment. Do not buy fittings based only on the size of a visible thread. After the work, ask the fitter to identify the connection and shutoff arrangement and explain the manufacturer’s normal-use instructions that apply to your equipment.
Patio heaters and gas fire pits
Outdoor gas equipment needs to be assessed for the actual setting where it will operate. A product described as an outdoor heater or fire pit is not automatically suitable beneath every roof, inside a gazebo or beside every building surface. Follow the selected model’s listing and instructions, and confirm the proposed arrangement before installation.
Patio heater service and repair
Report what happens during startup and normal operation: no ignition, a pilot that will not hold, intermittent shutdown, uneven heating or a problem after storage. If safe, note the displayed model information. The inspection should distinguish an appliance fault from a fuel-supply, connection or installation concern.
Do not bypass a safety device or repeatedly attempt to light equipment that is behaving abnormally. Wind exposure, equipment condition and the installation location may all be relevant, but a symptom alone cannot confirm a failed component. Ask whether the model can be supported and whether parts need to be sourced before booking repair work.
Fire pit connections and servicing
For a new fire pit, provide the complete product information rather than a photograph of the decorative enclosure alone. The burner system, fuel type, required input, approved media, controls and installation instructions determine what must be considered. Finishing materials and the surrounding structure need to be compatible with the selected installation.
For an existing fire pit, describe any recent changes to the burner, media, enclosure or controls. Do not add unapproved decorative material or alter the burner arrangement to change the flame appearance. If the unit has been disconnected for a renovation, include reconnection and operating checks in the agreed scope.
Gas line additions, relocations and capacity
Adding another gas appliance changes the demand that the system may need to serve. Piping suitability cannot be established from a short photograph, a pipe diameter mentioned over the phone or the performance of one existing appliance. The proposed equipment and the existing connected loads need to be considered together.
The assessment may need information about appliance input ratings, the supply arrangement, the piping route and access to the relevant sections of the system. A longer route, additional appliances or a different equipment specification can change the design. The fitter should explain which information is confirmed and what still requires inspection before a final scope is set.
Where work affects the meter or utility service, coordination with FortisBC may be necessary. Utility work and the customer-side gas installation are different responsibilities. A contractor should not promise a utility upgrade or a specific supply arrangement before the appropriate assessment and any required utility confirmation.
For a buried route, deck project or renovation, raise the gas work early in planning. Concealed connections, inaccessible sections, excavation and reinstatement can affect the sequence of work. Let the project team coordinate required inspections and approvals before piping is covered or finishing makes access difficult.
Gas contractor licensing and permits in British Columbia
FortisBC is the gas utility, not the authority that issues a BC gas contractor licence. Technical Safety BC administers gas contractor licensing. Confirm the appropriate contractor credentials and the permit arrangements for your project. You can review the official Technical Safety BC gas licensing information when comparing contractors.
Permit requirements depend on the regulated work and the authority responsible for the location. Before installation or an alteration begins, establish who will obtain the applicable authorization, what work it covers and how the required declarations or inspection requests will be handled. Read the official gas installation permit guidance for work within Technical Safety BC’s jurisdiction.
A municipal building approval, strata approval or permission from a landlord does not by itself settle the gas permit requirements. Those approvals can serve different purposes. For a project involving structural work, a new appliance location, common property or an exterior change, identify the relevant responsibilities before arranging installation dates.
When you request a quote, ask for a clear explanation of the permit scope and the party responsible for it. Keep any applicable permit and completion information with the equipment records. If the proposed work changes, confirm whether that change also affects the authorization or the agreed installation scope.
What to expect from the assessment and installation process
A useful process connects your request with the equipment and property conditions. It should leave you able to understand the work, the limits of the quote and the information needed before an appointment can be confirmed.
- Describe the project. Provide the city, appliance type, model and intended change. Mention a renovation, shared gas system, previous disconnection or equipment problem that may affect the visit.
- Establish the installation conditions. Review the existing supply, connection, proposed route, access and manufacturer requirements. Identify the applicable approval and permit responsibilities.
- Agree on the scope. Confirm what is included, what requires another trade, whether parts must be ordered and how additional work will be discussed if an unexpected condition is found.
- Complete and check the agreed work. Appropriate connection, safety and operating checks should be carried out by the qualified person responsible for the installation.
- Review the handover. Ask what was changed, what documentation applies, how the appliance should normally operate and which unresolved items need follow-up.
The appointment length depends on the actual job. An accessible replacement connection and a new line through a finished property should not be treated as equivalent tasks. Tell us about delivery windows, access restrictions or other trades so availability and the likely sequence can be discussed realistically.
When the gas work is part of an appliance installation
A gas connection is one part of a complete heating or hot-water installation. Equipment selection may also involve venting, combustion air, electrical supply, drainage, system controls or the surrounding building. Book the service that matches the full project so the gas fitting scope is considered alongside those requirements.
For a new or replacement fireplace, visit our gas fireplace installation page. Venting, clearances, the fireplace opening and finishing affect the proposal as well as the fuel connection. If an existing fireplace has a fault, describe the symptoms before deciding that the gas line needs alteration.
For hydronic heating, our gas boiler installation information covers planning around heating and hot-water needs. A higher appliance output is not, by itself, a reason to assume the existing supply is suitable. The selected boiler and its complete installation requirements should be assessed.
For forced-air heating, discuss the connection as part of the gas furnace installation scope. For a tank or tankless replacement, use our water heater installation page and provide the current equipment details. These links help you describe the whole job rather than requesting an isolated fitting change.
Condos, strata buildings, rentals and shared systems
Explain whether the gas equipment and piping serve your unit alone or form part of a shared building system. A resident may be able to request an appointment while another person must authorize alterations. Establish the owner, property manager or strata contact who can approve the proposed work and arrange access.
Shared shutoffs, equipment rooms, exterior walls, balconies and common-property routes need coordination. Tell us about booking procedures, parking, loading access and any building work hours. If a gas interruption may affect other occupants, it should be planned with the responsible parties rather than treated as a routine in-suite appointment.
For a rental property, include the landlord or manager’s authorization requirements when describing the job. If an appliance has been disconnected, state whether it is being reconnected in the same position or moved. A change in location, equipment or building arrangement can affect the assessment even when the existing appliance is being reused.
Prepare for your gas fitting appointment
Send information that is already safely accessible. You do not need to remove an appliance, open a control compartment, disturb piping or enter a restricted equipment room to prepare a service request.
- Your city and the type of property, including a condo, townhouse, detached home or managed building.
- The appliance brand, model and intended fuel, if the label or purchase information is available.
- Whether you need a replacement connection, reconnection, new line, relocation or diagnosis.
- Photographs of the appliance and installation area taken without moving equipment or opening covers.
- Any relevant delivery date, renovation sequence, strata instructions or access restrictions.
- A description of the problem and when it started, including any recent work or disconnection.
Clear the normal access route and keep children and pets away from the work area during the appointment. Keep the installation instructions and product paperwork available. If plans change before the visit, let the team know so the correct scope and equipment information can be reviewed.
Compare the scope before comparing a gas fitting quote
Two quotes may cover different work even when both are described as a gas hookup. Ask whether the proposal includes assessing the existing supply, the required connection materials, any line alteration, applicable permit arrangements, appropriate checks and handover. Confirm the treatment of removal, disposal, reinstatement and work by other trades.
For a new line, ask how access and the proposed route affect the scope. For an appliance replacement, clarify whether the existing connector or other components can be retained after assessment. An assumption that everything can be reused can leave important work outside the original proposal.
Confirm any diagnostic or assessment charge when booking. A request for a quote does not automatically mean that an on-site diagnostic visit is free. If an unexpected condition changes the work, ask for the options and revised scope before deciding how to proceed. Equipment condition and safe installation requirements should guide that discussion.
Keep a useful record after the work
Keep the appliance instructions, invoice, model details and any applicable permit or completion information together. Ask which equipment was connected, which parts of the existing installation were retained and whether any follow-up work remains. For a managed property, share the relevant completion information with the person responsible for the equipment records.
Before using the appliance, make sure you understand the normal controls and the manufacturer’s operating instructions. If its behaviour changes, stop using it when appropriate and report the new symptom rather than adjusting the gas connection. Keep access to the equipment and its shutoff arrangement clear. Future servicing is easier when the next technician can identify the installation and understand what changed.

Questions before booking gas fitting work
Can a new gas appliance use the existing connection?
Possibly, after assessment. The new appliance’s fuel type, input and installation instructions must be considered alongside the existing supply and connection condition. A physical fit does not establish suitability. Send the old and new model information so the scope can be discussed before delivery.
Does FortisBC issue the contractor’s gas licence?
No. Technical Safety BC administers gas contractor licensing in BC. FortisBC is the gas utility. Contractor credentials, utility arrangements and the permit authority for a particular project are separate matters that should be confirmed before the work.
Will my gas fitting project require a permit?
Requirements depend on the regulated work and the authority responsible for the location. Confirm the applicable permit or authorization before installation or alterations begin, including who obtains it and what work it covers. Strata or landlord permission does not replace a required gas authorization.
Can every propane barbecue be converted to natural gas?
No. Any conversion must be supported by the manufacturer for the exact model and completed within the applicable requirements. Do not attach a propane appliance to a natural gas outlet or select conversion parts by appearance. Provide the model and fuel label when asking about options.
Can you reconnect a range after a renovation?
Contact us with the model, location and details of the disconnection. The condition and suitability of the supply and connection need to be assessed before reconnection. Tell us if the appliance was moved, the kitchen layout changed or a different model is being installed.
What should I do if I smell gas near an appliance?
Leave the area without operating switches or using a phone inside. Once outside, call the FortisBC emergency line at 1-800-663-9911 or 911. Do not wait for a contractor appointment or a website reply. Follow the utility’s emergency instructions.
Can you confirm a gas line size from a photograph?
A photograph can help plan an assessment, but it cannot establish the complete design. Appliance loads, the supply arrangement, the route and other installation conditions need to be considered. Do not purchase piping or fittings based only on a visible size or an informal estimate.
What information helps you arrange the right appointment?
Send your city, equipment type, model if available and the work or symptoms you need assessed. Include delivery dates, renovation plans and building access requirements where relevant. The team can then discuss the service scope, availability and any information needed before the visit.
